TIPS ON COST EFFECTIVELY UPDATING YOUR BATHROOM
December
2008

With more people deciding not to move house and opting to upgrade their existing property, Mike Wilson from bathroom manufacturer Kohler explains how to cost effectively transform a bathroom to create an envious retreat.
“When times are financially testing, many people decide to stay put and spruce up their home. Updating kitchens and bathrooms are usually top of the list. Depending on budget, the whole bathroom can be updated with a new suite or by simply adding a new vessel and brassware to create a focal point.
“If you’re working within a strict budget, focus on creating one statement area in the bathroom. One of the most effective ways to create a statement is to introduce a Vessel which is an opportunity to add colour, texture and unusual materials. Vessels can be inset into a countertop or mounted on a piece of furniture to create a ‘wow factor’.
“If your existing sanitaryware is perfectly adequate think about what you need or would enjoy having in your bathroom and what could make a good selling point in the future. We are currently seeing an increase in the number of wetrooms being installed in homes and whilst the majority of people don’t have the space or money for this, you can create ‘the look’ by opting for a less expensive walk-in shower.
“The Iana shower instantly creates a minimal and stylish look. The low level tray not only adds to the enclosure’s sophisticated look but makes it easy for children, elderly or disabled users to shower. Consider opting for a thermostatic shower valve, such as the Purist exposed shower valve, which can be set to a certain temperature to ensure safe use for all the family.
“If you are thinking about installing a shower in an en-suite or second bathroom, you could consider getting rid of the bath. Showers are not only convenient, but can help reduce water consumption, and in the long term can help to save money on water bills.
“When updating your bathroom, try to buy water saving products where possible. Low flush WCs are an easy way to save on water. Kohler has recently introduced an Eco Flush WC to its Patio suite which operates on a dual flush and uses 30% less water than the standard UK WC without compromising on flush efficiency.
“If you are looking for an entirely new suite, opt for something that is clean and minimal. A new suite does not have to cost the earth and can still look cutting edge. The Ove suite comes with a range of wall-hung sanitaryware to help maximise floor space and create a fresh and minimal design. The double vanity adds a touch of glamour and creates a ‘his’ and ‘hers’ washstation.”
