2018 Trends retrospective

By Martyn White

2018 was definitely the year of the bathroom. Exciting trends, innovative materials and the progression of technology have made the approach to bathroom design an exciting prospect.

We start each year as we always do; with exciting predictions of upcoming trends and styles. This year focused heavily on material with matte finishes being predicted to continue their dominance in the market. Kohler showcased their impressive collection of Matte Black Components™ during the year’s leading design exhibitions including Museo Bagatti Valsecchi at Milan’s design week and London’s design fair. The finish has proved to be incredibly popular with the public and media coverage, style shoots and designers have reaffirmed its success, many stating that this only just the beginning for matte.

While the year started to the fanfare of exotic colours, palm and floral prints; all part of the eye-catching Jungle Theme, interior design ended up taking a much softer approach with the monochromatic style, pastel pinks and soft greys dominating magazine covers, Instagram profiles and designer reviews. It appears that everyone wanted to get hold of the pastel pink square cut tiles and it was the Matte Black Components™ that they wanted to pair them with.

I am sure we can all agree that 2018 has been a year of creativity and adventure. People are willing to express themselves through decoration and are finally starting to take on the bathroom, venturing away from the standard white ceramic and stainless-steel finishes. The room that was often cast aside, cold and afraid to change is now becoming the new heart of the home. Whether you are an avid follower of trend predictions or follow your own personal tastes, it has never been easier to transform your bathroom into your desired style.

With 2019 here, I look forward to hearing more about the latest innovations and designs for the future. If the latest are anything to go by, we are going to be able to release our inner artists…
