Let the British Bathroom Revolution Begin

Guest blog by Martyn White

Technology has involvement in almost every part of our daily lives; from waking us up in the morning to helping us work throughout the day and wind down in the evenings. It controls the restaurants we eat in, the transport we use and has a significant presence in many of our homes. When we think about technology, there is one room that appears to have escaped the digital revolution, but is it about to change?

As a culture, we Brits have steered clear of technology in the bathroom, but why? Discussing the topic with designers and the public alike, there appear to be quite a few reasons behind the resistance, from the intrusive nature of technology, the expense and even “there is simply no need for it”. With technology transforming bathrooms in other areas of the world, particularly the Middle East and Asian markets, there appears to be a confidence that the British bathroom may soon finally embrace technology, for a good reason too.

With intelligent toilets such as Kohler’s ‘Veil®’ and ‘Numi®’ ranges, interactive mirrors and digital taps, every designs creation is for ease of use, hygiene and personal experience. With intelligent toilets, users not only enjoy the small comforts such as night lighting and heated seats, but they also centre around hygiene with self-cleaning modes and UV lights to sanitise surfaces. Showcasing at Kohler’s London Design Forum, the Verdera® Voice Lighted Mirror with integrated Alexa can control the lights, provide traffic and weather information for the day ahead and even re-order toiletries with a simple voice command. The digital taps and showers stand out as the future home necessity memorising water temperature, pressure settings and shower cycles for the individuals that use them, ensuring that there are no more scolding showers and unpleasant surprises in the mornings.

While one can still argue that the bathroom does not need technology, Kohler has demonstrated in its latest ranges that technology can make the daily experiences of using the bathroom much more comfortable, enjoyable and efficient. It is time for the bathroom revolution to begin.
